OK. How many out there would have stopped if a fellow cyclist had a mechanical/puncture/bonk??

On way home from work the other day I punctured 🙁 it was also chucking it down. So there I was, trying to get the tyre off, whip the tube out and then trying to thumb the tyre back on. (Fulcrums and conti’s do not combine well with bare hands) anyway through all these antics two cyclists passed me and totally ignored me. It wouldn’t have bothered me if they were ninjas but these guys were wearing all the kit. Not sure if I was pissed at their blanking me or at puncturing. I know personally I would stop if I was on two wheel, 4 wheels or my two feet.

I think it’s good manners to slow down or stop and ask if people need a hand, and I always do.

New Year’s Day I ended up standing in the pissing rain helping someone with my pump after their gas inflator had failed. And I was wearing my Rapha stuff too, definitely off-brand there. 😉

I notice lots of commuters don’t carry much in the way of tools, but a small selection can sort out almost anything.

Most severe I’ve had to deal with was a guy who managed to mangle his rear mech and bend the hangar on an old steel frame. With his permission, I split the chain, removed the mech and converted him to a single-speed. At least he could ride to his LBS!

I always check someone has the kit they need to sort themselves out. I’ve even done whilst driving. I’ve helped someone out with a pump once when theirs wouldn’t work, another guy with a multi-tool.

A couple of weeks ago I was on a busy road and a cyclist was running on the verge, whilst pushing their bike. As I passed I said “all OK?” and he replied in the affirmative… still no idea why he was doing it (geared up so I don’t think he’d nicked it :))

    I would certainly have
I would certainly have stopped, not that I would have been able to help. Its not just when your in trouble people ignore you, just this morning I smiled and put my hand up and was totally blanked 3 times. Though another day everyone waves back, you were just unlucky that day.
