1986 Peugeot Ventoux Recondition – Tips?

    Gents and Gentesses,

    My stephdad bought a Pegeout Ventoux in the mid-eighties to cycle the infamous 540km “Strenght Test” from Trondheim – Oslo, which I might add, he didn’t complete back then so we’re having a go maybe next year.

    Anyways – he kept the bike; a 1986 (?) Peugeot Ventoux which I find exceptionally nice!

    NOTHING has been done on the bike since 1986.. Same rubber.. same tubes.. etc 😛

    I tried to ride the bike and every second felt like I was about to crash and die a painful death.

    So I figured I might try to recondition it, make it safe and usable but still keep the esscene of the bike.

    There are a few issues I’ve identified, but I think some of you older lads will know more about this than me:

    -Replace the tubes and rubber to something thick and versatile (Durano DD’s?)
    -Replace all wiring (gears & brakes)
    -Replace Break Pads
    -Maybe replace saddle so something a bit more sleek? (Suggestions?)
    -Replace the bar tape (Still white of course) the current one is as hard as rock.
    -The hoods are REALLY worn.. But where can I find replacements for them?
    -I live in a really hilly area, and its possible to go anywhere without meeting a 7-15% hill of 300-400 meters.. Change casette to something a bit more easy?

    And thats where it stops for me. I looked at the Retroshifters thing on the site a couple of days ago, but I thought that might take away the esscence of such a bike (that it scares the hell out of you).

    Take your old metal and make it shiny again, an example of the normal one, taking your car wheels and chroming them and also can be done with bike frames

    Maybe the deraillieurs? Hubs?

    Although I believ they were never chrome in the first place

    What about a good old rub and polish? I mean the rust isn’t realy THAT big of a problem here?

    Strip it down, new tyres, brake pads, bar tape and hoods

    Then if need be, a new cassette, everything else sent off to be re-chromed 🙂

    good tyres and brakes will
    good tyres and brakes will transform the ride. Get skinwalls if you want, just make sure they’re good. buy good quality cartridge pads too, although there’s a limit to how good the braking’s ever going to be with those levers and callipers. also, check the wheels for spoke tension, they’ll probably be a bit loose and that will make the bike feel pretty woolly.

    Looks good for something that hasn’t been touched for so long!

    SJS Cycles are good for parts for older bikes. These hoods may be suitable:

    As for the saddle, I’d get something like a white Concor although they are a bit pricey:

    Stick with skin wall tyres if you can find them as they will keep the look of the bike.

    I reckon it’ll look tidy done up, good luck with it.
