Planet X al30 wheels, Ultremo ZX tyres on an Allez

My father recently purchased a set of these:

As yet I haven’t ridden the bike with them on but will add my feedback to the thread.

He has had a couple of outings so far and early impressions are good.

There have been comments about their longevity and how they stand up to winter weather. As my father rides 3 different bikes and the road bike gets outings in fair weather, this one is something I feel he will not really be able to prove or disprove.

The main reason for the wheel change was a weight saving excercise and they were a good weight at a low price so thought he’d take the chance and give them a go.

His bike is a 2010 Specialized Allez 16 model in size 54cm. It is pretty standard bar the following changes:
He (being over 70) found the standard stem a long reach so swapped for an 80mm Prolight stem like this

He also added some basic pedals like this:

Plus a basic plastic bottle cage and basic Bikemate computer. (he had the wiring on the bike while weighing but not the computer itself)

This lead to an all up weight with stock Alex S500 wheels and Spesh Mondo (23c) tyres of 22.25 lbs

Or, bike test style – less pedals = 21.5 lbs

The replacing of the wheels with the Planet X AL30 and the addition of Schwalbe Ultremon ZX tyres (23c) and SV20 inner tubes he weighed it twice with the following results:

All in less pedals and cage: 19.5 lbs

Complete bike (ready to roll) = 20.25 lbs

His scales were checking using a set 4 lb weight btw.

I will feedback further as he rides more and when I get to try the bike myself. I ride a 56cm Allez so can compare them fairly well I hope.
