treaded winter tyre

    hi all,have a cube attempt with mavic aksium wheels and tyres,part of my daily cycle includes canal path some of it gravel some smooth ,700 23 fitmenton at moment, can i use 25 or even 28 with thread for grip ,schwalbe marathon is only one i can see,any suggestions appreciated there seems to be just enough clearance for 28 size anything else i need to check? .

    currently I run the

    currently I run the 700×28 Marathon Plus’s on my Boardman Pro Hybrid which had 28’s (Maxxis Detonators) fitted as original, so no issues there at all. However, I also have fitted the 28 Marathon Plus’s on my ‘old faitful’ Specialized Allez with no problems. The clearences are a lot tighter than with the ‘normal’ 23’s but they do fit without problems. Just a little caution though – they wont fit on either my Kuota Kharma, S Works Tarmac or Kuota Kredo Ultra – the tolerances are just too tight, nor would I want them on these due to different, non-commute useage. 23’s are the near maximum for the latter bikes, though Marathon’s are not really for these bikes due to design, some would also say ‘street cred’.
    Im realy not too sure what clearences are on your bike, but as suggested before it’s not a bad idea to try them for the money. I have both Marathons and the Plus’s and on the road don’t find much, if any, differences on the commute.

    Tread doesn’t give more grip most of the time (see this Sheldon link). Durano or Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase would be excellent alternatives, though the original Marathon (not as heavy or dead feeling as the Plus) is still a very good tyre and £30 is not much in the grand scheme of things.

    Avoiding the temptation to pump the tyres up too hard can be more useful on variable surfaces and improve comfort. I’m 65kg – or at least I was before the Christmas binge – and 70-80 psi is more than adequate in 700×25 tyres at this time of year.

    The ad is for the Marathon’s rather than the Marathon plus which are quite a bit more expensive and have more puncture protection.
    That said I’ve used Marathons and they are very good.

    Do you really need a treaded tyre? The Cube seems to have 105 (a review) so there won’t be much room under the brakes but I’d have thought you could get a 28mm in there.

    thanks for reply they seem to be best tyre i could see what bike are you running the 28 on did you originally have size 23 and then change to 28 ,my lbs wasent much help they just said get a set and we will see if they fit .

    Hi, not too sure I can help on the clearance for the specific bike, but for sure I can really recommend the Schwalbe Marathon Plus’s for the towpath gravel, road etc. Great grip in all conditions I find and I have never had a puncture on mine – never.
    I use them during the bad weather on my 20 mile each way commute and I can find nothing better (I have tried a few too). Yes they are a little heavier than out and out race tyres but I would put up with the little extra weight to be never stuck on the side of the road with a puncture. The slightly higher weight – just think of it as a bit better for your training. Mine are 28’s and fit just fine, not as big as some would imagine.
