Gear cable recommendation for mechanical R8000 build

I am building up a Mason Resolution using an R8000 mechanical groupset. SP41 outers are my go to choice but I am not sure which gear wires to use for best results. Shimano recommend polymer coated, but staff at my LBS are telling me that when new they are good but the coating wears off leading to problems. I also see Optislick as another option, but wonder if they will suffer in the same way. The final possibility is uncoated stainless steel Shimano wires.  The rear mech outer cable will run from the shifter to the mech in one continuous length through the top tube and down the seat stay. The front mech cable outer will run down to the BB where it will enter a cable stop, exiting through a (very) long nosed ferrule. Can anybody offer me any recommendations?

    All response gratefully received.

    Paul

For the best and long lasting

For the best and long lasting performance only Shimano Optislick.

Cheap cables have certainly their place, though…

    Fibrax or Clarks Stainless in

Fibrax or Clarks Stainless in the workshop… I buy them by the 100’s…. never fail…. If building with new shimano shifters I swap them out before the build to stop the blasted coating doing it’s worst.

On many Giant’s that come in with internal cabling, they have the inner sleeve through the frame and I’m always having to replace that due to the Shimano cable coating, you never get a clean sleeve.

    I agree, the shimano inners

I agree, the shimano inners with the loose polymer are a nightmare. Whenever you pull them through small holes like the ones in your brifters or internally routed cable runs, the coating bunches up and comes off completely blocking the holes – horrible! I use generic stainless inners from Amazon.

    Your LBS are correct, the

Your LBS are correct, the coating comes off and degrades performance.

I use Fibrax stainless slick inner wires – 10 for £20.29 direct from their ebay store (pear & barrel end brake cables are available in the same listing).
