Campy 11 cassettes: Super Record, Record or Chorus?

    Hi road.cc,

    I’m on a Colnago C64 with a Super Record EPS v3 11 gruppo, and as expected, my cassette wore out after intense riding. I don’t know if I should buy another SR cassette or opt for the heavier but cheaper Record or Chorus cassettes.

    Any advice will be welcome.

    In my experience of commuting

    In my experience of commuting, Chorus cassettes and chains do last a bit longer than Ultegra, about 50 – 100% longer, on the same bike commuting the same route, summer and winter, rain or shine. But then they’re about 50-100% more expensive, so you get what you pay for.

    Nevertheless I have an SR cassette on the ‘best’ bike – a 2009 Colnago Extreme Power Super with 2009 SR – and the titanium cogs do wear faster.  But why spoil the ship for a hap’orth of tar, as they say. If you can afford a C64 with EPS, why cut corners?

    Did you teleport from the past?  My Super Record with Ultegra cassette/chain works like an absolute dream.

    For the record (sorry), one of my bikes has Ultegra 10 changers with a Campy cassette on my turbo.

    Another uses an Edco hub with otherwise full Campy 10 EPS V2.

    Changing is impeccable on both machines.

    2. As a matter of fact I’m aware that only weight weenies buy Super Record cassettes because of the 6 titanium sprockets which reduce weight (same with Shimano Dura-Ace cassettes).As a matter of fact, if the SR cassette wasn’t in the gruppo back when I bought it I would have gone for Record cassette instead (small weight difference + 3 titanium sprockets which makes it lighter compared to Chorus cassette and not such a big price difference whilst on sale). 

    Probably gonna go with Chorus, or Record if I get a good sale for it.

    Stick with Campag cassettes,

    Stick with Campag cassettes, nothing else shifts as well in a Campag drivetrain. Then it’s a straight money/weight/poshness trade-off, assuming the teeth range you want is available in multiple options. I’m fond of Potenza and Centaur myself.

    Although, C64 with EPS, aren’t you contractually obliged to ride Record as a bare minimum?

    Centaur cassettes are even
    Centaur cassettes are even cheaper and still very good quality. Not much weight difference to the higher end cassettes either. I don’t think you will notice any shifting difference either.

    Get yourself a Shimano

    Get yourself a Shimano freehub and a Shimano chain/cassette.  You’d have so much change left over if comapring to a Record cassette!  Campag spare parts have unecessary prices attached to them.

    I have the same groupset on

    I have the same groupset on my C60. After having tried a record cassette on my C40 (9sp.) and only getting 3000km out of it I decided it was not worth the money and switched to Chorus. When I spec’d the C60 I asked for a Chorus cassette instead of SR/Record. It is over £100 quid cheaper and, based on previous experience, lasts longer.

    I have a 11-25 SR cassette

    I have a 11-25 SR cassette and a Edco monoblock 11-29 which is light weight as well as having a wider gear range.  I have EPS and I do re-train it if I swap cassettes.

    I am told that the Edco is a bit louder.  I can’t really tell the difference.  EPS shifts just fine with the Edco cassette on the bike after re-training.  When I wear out the 11-29 I will probably get the Edco 11-32, since I am not getting any younger.
