What’s the oldest piece of cycling kit you’re still using?

    We’ve just got talking about this in the office so thought we’d throw it out to everyone else! For me it’s some More Mile bib tights bought in around 2009, and news editor Simon still uses these winter gloves bought from Condor Cycles some time in the 90’s.

    I have La Vie Claire jersey from about 1985 that still gets out on some summer days. The picture is me setting off for France from Llandudno to watch the 1989 Tour.

    Hardly ever wear it now but I

    Hardly ever wear it now but I’ve still got one of those classic purple & orange Ronhill windshell jackets from about mid 90’s.

    My MTB has an original Flite Ti saddle on it which was used on at least two MTBs before this one so is probably 20 years old. It’s rather scuffed but SO comfy.

    Have still got an ancient

    Have still got an ancient pair of Shimano SPD shoes from very early 90s – don’t use them any more, but just can’t quite bring myself to bin them, even if the sole on one of them is in danger of coming off.

    Got an Axo jersey from mid-90s and pair of Nike bib shorts of similar age that just refuse to die – and they’ve been almost entirely used for mountain biking, so it’s not like they’ve been cossetted on road duties.

    Castelli Once team short sleeved jersey in TDF alt Black colours. Gets out once or twice a summer, should last another 100 washes.

    I still use the cycling

    I still use the cycling jacket I bought in 1990 before heading to Spain to ride up the Cares Gorge on my MTB. Some of the stitching is loose and there’s a hole in one elbow from an ‘off’ but it’s what I wear over my BMX kit when I’m training on cold days. I don’t wear it every day for commuting like I used to but it is used very regularly. I wore it on Sunday and again this Tuesday.

    And I still ride my old MTB too, that very same one I rode up the Cares Gorge all those years ago. Ok, so only the frame, front mech, carrier, back brake and bottle holder are actually original. 

    I have a newer MTB for off-road riding and the old one is just my commuting hack these days. But 30 years of hard use and high mileages shows some of the benefits of steel frames.
