Bike Insurance Question

    Hi All

New to the forum – No doubt I will be on here a fair bit.

    Anyway…

Do you know if most bike insurance policies would cover you in the event you were hijacked? I only ask as a lad from the local cycle club had his bike taken at knifepoint on the way home from work – Thankfully he was left unharmed but he got screwed by his insurance – They claimed having your bike taken at knifepoint whilst waiting at the traffic lights was ‘wilful neglegence’ – He is taking legal action against them.

I have a nice road bike that I have just bought and I am about to get insurance for it but given it will NEVER be locked up outside (I have learnt my lesson) the only situation in which I can see the bike being stolen is either by a house break-in / Office break-in or being taken by force whilst riding (hijack). Of those 3 the only realistic scenario would be hijack. Breaking in would require bypassing lots of deadbolts and house alarm etc.

I have pinged off an email to a couple of insurance firms that specialise in bikes but as of yet no reply.

On the face of it I think I would be covered but I know how badly insurance companies want to get out of paying. I do have a helmet cam so in the very unlikely event its hijacked that could offer some mitigation.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts?

I assume he went to the
I assume he went to the police and got a crime number? Not sure how the insurance could ignore that.

Would be good to know which
Would be good to know which insurance company he used so that we can avoid using them.

Forget calling it hijack; Theft using the threat of violence is called robbery. If a bike insurance does not cover you against robbery then it seems pointless.

My insurance (Nationwide home contents) just stipulates that it must be securely locked whilst unattended, otherwise that is wilful negligence.
This sounds like some thicko followed a decision tree blindly – was the bike stolen, yes – was it locked, no – wilful negligence.

I’m low risk too. Cheap bikes. A bit lazy though. Been intending to get coverage a while now.

Anyway. Policie on web site, click below costs somewhere and read if wanting to view such.

    Jeez, something else to be

Jeez, something else to be scared of this halloween!

I really can’t see ‘wilful negligence’ standing up to scrutiny. If you/they’re a British Cycling member it may be worth talking to their legal folk.

I cannot quite tell, having tried to read my policy documents, but you can get crash damage covered.  And crashes happen.
