Wheelset Suggestions please

    I have a gravel bike which i want to double up as a winter road bike. I’m not keen on using the 37mm gravel tyres on 50 mile road sessions and dont want to keep changing the tyres. I’m after a second set of wheels which i can have 28mm road tyres on.

    I’ve looked around but struggling to find any within budget at the correct spec. 

    Any suggestions would be appreciatted.

    700c,  will takes 160mm rotor discs, width suitable for 28mm tyres,  12mm thro-axles (100mm front – 142 rear) and a budget of £300 (Its only a winter training bike).

    for my Boardman. £125, I had a voucher code which brought them down to £87.50. The code was Oct19, which I’ve just checked, and it still works. They don’t come with rim tape or skewers, so there’s that to add, but I had some spare anyway.

    I’m using mine for winter club runs and the originals for commuting and off road. Remember that you’ll need a cassette and disc rotors.

    When my Fulcrum Racing Sport
    When my Fulcrum Racing Sport DB freehub pawls broke and I needed a new rear wheel in a hurry (parts very hard to come by, seems to be a common issue on that wheel) I got the rear of this set: https://www.merlincycles.com/pro-build-chosen-hub-alex-draw-19-road-cx-disc-wheel-700c-98436.html and must say I’m very happy for the low cost (£120). Now I have the Fulcrum back, just the 8 weeks later, I’ve been thinking of getting a front wheel for just the same reason – tyre choice. The matching front wheel is just £75, and a search hasn’t shown me anything to match the weight at anywhere near the cost. For a sub £200 wheel set, I think 1600g is not bad at all. Cero would do a lighter rim brake set for the money but don’t seem to have anything quite right for discs.

    I’ve been happy with the rear wheel so far, it has stayed true and not creaked, and doesn’t look too cheap. The freehub is very loud, which is not my taste, but I’m learning to live with it.

    Have a look at Prime wheels.

    Have a look at Prime wheels. I just fitted a pair I got for winter wheels, for me they ticked the value for money box (price to weight mainly) and were tubeless compatible (in fact all I had to do was fit the tyres, they came with tubeless tape and valves).

    Some flavour of the lower end DT Swiss Splines should work. Reasonably light for the price, all the adaptors for different axles, tubeless ready if you want that sort of thing…
