Ultegra groupset or 105 and new Wheelset?

    Hello all

    I have a Seven titanium frameset and want to put a new groupset on to replace the old Campagnolo centaur.

    My budget is £1k 

    choice 1 – R7000 with Mavic UST pro

    choice 2 – R8000 with  Just Riding Along Lark Light

    Love to hear any opinions /  ideas

    Campagnolo and Shimano 11s

    Campagnolo and Shimano 11s cassettes have near identical spacing, so you can run a Shimano cassette on an otherwise Campag drivetrain.

    I do like Campag. But Wahoo

    I do like Campag. But Wahoo doesn’t make a  cassette body adapter and that’s what I use for a significant amount of my training.

    i have a jtek shiftmate as a makeshift measure at the moment. But it just doesn’t work so well plus I’m getting older so want a wider spread of gears.

    if it wasn’t for the Wahoo is I’d be Chorus all the way

    You will notice the

    You will notice the difference of the new wheels in addition to the 105 more than you will notice the difference between the 105 and Ultegra.

    But Srchar raises a good point… why are you abandoning Campag?

    I have Centaur on one of my bikes, and Ultegra on my ‘best’ bike.  Whilst the Shimano works beautifully I still prefer the Campag thumb and paddle shift vs the wobbly brifters on Shimano.

    R8000 for sure – looks like

    R8000 for sure – looks like you can get it for about £500 if you shop around.

    As for the wheels, depending on whether you want to go carbon or not, you can pick up a set of Prime carbon Clinchers for about £500 inlcuding tyres. If you’re looking for lightweight alu however, I’d be tempted to check out the Hunt wheels (based on experience albeit only the disc version), but also the new Scribe wheels look light and good value for tubeless. 

    Full Campag chorus and a set Spada wheels on that frame would look mint tho 😉

    Yeah, I’d go for the R8000 on such a nice frame. You can then *justify* upgrading the wheels in the future 😉

    It’s probably snob value. Putting R7000 on a £3.5k from doesn’t seem the right thing to do. 

    Recommendations for good value Wheelset may be worthwhile

    I have the new Ultegra R8000

    I have the new Ultegra R8000 on both my bikes and I’ve ridden bikes with 105 R7000 – I honestly can’t tell the difference.

    I was actually going to get R7000 on my winter/commuter road bike, but I only went with R8000 as it was the same price at the time.

    You have a couple options, either buy R8000 and a cheaper set a wheels (then upgrade the wheels in the future).

    OR, if that’s not an option (i.e. there is no chance you will have the funds to upgrade the wheelset in the near future), I would recommend buying R7000 and better wheels (though it’s possible the whole setup will be no lighter than R8000 with slightly cheaper wheels).

    The only real difference between R7000 and R8000 is the weight (105 R7000 being slightly heavier).
