Bike insurance, whilst stored in car boot

    Hi,

    I stay away from home 1 or 2 nights a week in a hotel, and I’m hoping to take bike with me, take it out for rides after work, and keep the bike in the boot overnight outside the hotel.

    Unfortunatley my home insurance (Neos) can cover my bike whilst away from home, but not when it’s in car.  And my car insurance (Churchilll) don’t cover bikes in a car.

    I can look to change insurer when renewal comes, but anyone got any other suggestions?

    Would separate bike insurance be a better/cheaper option?

    It’s a £1100 bike for info.

    I use Assetsure bicycle
    I use Assetsure bicycle insurance for this. The bike gets covered underneath with a long estate boot liner attached to the front seat headrests, then a 2nd one goes over the bike like a camouflage blanket. Then there is a U-lock or chain that goes through the seat belt mounts, or the rear seat attachments up near the seatbelt (like a metal ring the seats lock to when folded up), then car locked and deadlocked and alarmed, and insured. Its invisible if you peer in, and subtle and very hard to steal. Insurance is good value too, £12 per month including accessories and clothing.

    Aye, that would work, less effort than making your own but certainly more fragile/more spendy but for those who want something that fits perfectly/folds down small/light etc it’s a nice bit of kit.

    If there’s nowhere to store

    If there’s nowhere to store bike or anywhere that is easy/quick to access (so you’re nt having to wait around for staff for keys etc) then this is my solution. Buy a tarp or full size motor bike cover, maybe you’ll have to sew/tie up the ends and possibly add a drawstring system but you immediately have a cheap ‘bag’ cum cover that you can drop the bike in(so open end is at top), thus preventing any crap from wheels/frame getting onto carpets etc.

    Always check annualy that your insurances are offering best value. I would never store a bike in a motor unless it was a last ditch measure and even then only if the car park was secure. ATEOTD if hotels/BB won’t help out then simply find somewhere else and let the owners/company know why.

    When I leave my bike for long

    When I leave my bike for long periods of time in the car, I lock it to the metal ring thats exposed once you fold the rear seats down.  A U-Lock with the wire goes through both sides, would take some serious effort to get the bike out and probably easier to just steal the car.

    I think that you leaving the bike in the boot does seem easier for you.  Ask the hotel but if this is a regular thing maybe get specialist bike insurance, talk to them first though and explain your circumstances, make sure you’d be covered and not paying out and not being covered.  It might also provide fuller coverage than the home insurance too.  Expensive, but peace of mind…

    Likewise when I lived in a block of flats with underground parking. Physically impossible to get the bike out of the car quickly and quietly

    I just thought the hotel might not be pleased if you’re wheeling a wet and/or muddy bike through their nice hotel, so had assumed that kind of thing was a no-go……but, I suppose now I think about it, it’s no different to wheeling a kids buggy through the hotel 🙂

    I’ll ask them when I’m there next, and see what they say.  That would be the ideal option. Failing that, I’ll ask if they do some kind of secure storage.

    absolutely, did that earlier in the year, both Holiday Inn and Premier Inn have shown ads with cyclists doing that, I dont see a problem with keeping your bike in the room at all

    used to do that and I’d try and park car with back end very close to a wall to discourage getting in that way and have the bike chained to whatever can find under carpet (seatbelt mounts usually) just to make it hard….I’d assume the bike is out of sight otherwise no go ….as to hotel storage just double check no triple check whoever has the keys is going to be available when you want to leave and still take a decent lock

    I’ve never had a problem with

    I’ve never had a problem with hotels either having a garage, sometimes with lockable cages inside for bikes, or some sort of not-a-garage secure storage for bikes. I’ve only once needed to take the bike into the hotel room.

    You could also consider a folding bike, in a bag, which you could keep in the room more easily and with less chance of the hotel objecting.

    Premier Inn were quite happy

    Premier Inn were quite happy for us to take our bikes into our hotel rooms when we stayed with them in April.

    A lot of hotels have secured storage rooms you could put your bike in. Worth asking about.
