    Eddie Bulpitt, a developer and consultant on geospatial information systems at OS, said the road rose 60 metres over its 350-metre length. He said: “The steepest five-metre section of road is a crampon, belay, rappel-needing, roped-on 46.30%. That’s steep.”

    He continued: “However, the steepest 10-metre section [the crucial distance for the world record] is 39.25%.” Bulpitt added: “So, great test of the legs to cycle up and a test of nerves to keep braking to a minimum on the way down. Might need a few spare chains and brake blocks too.”

    Also being from a place where we were accused of unnatural (or are they?) relations with woolly ones, I also can’t find reason to cry racism about this. It may be on the same spectrum as the important stuff – but it’s really so far the other end as to be unworthy of mention in the same context.

    Not sure if this is people just having a go at BTBS (who I often disgree with and find uncouth – but not racist in what I’ve seen) or whether they just like being offended.

    I’m Welsh and grew up on a sheep farm so I’m quite familiar with the insult in question.

    It’s pretty tame stuff and definitely not racism.

    If you cry racism about stuff like that it diminishes the victims of actual racism.

    Spend some time at Cardiff City and you’ll often hear the home fans singing ‘1-0 to the sheep shaggers’ (Not that often this season unfortunately).

    That’s the way to deal with it, not pretend you’re some sort of victim.

    That’s a bit disingenous – the Welsh have a separate language and culture, so although I wouldn’t class them as a ‘race’, they’re certainly an ethnic group.

    You’re quite correct in identifying that ffordd is Welsh for road and stryd is street. but you can see ffordd used in urban environments as much as you can see road in english towns and cities. As for the sheep shagger comment, that just makes you a thick racist cunt!

    He literally cannot make a point without embarrasing himself.

    Probably the steepest road I

    Probably the steepest road I cycled on was when I did the tour of Yorkshire out of Stocksbridge, Sheffield.  There was one little climb which my Garmin registered 33% . Whether that number is correct, I dont know.  What I do know is my long wheelbase Tripster was very happy to lift the front wheel, per pedal revolution.  There were riders falling off everywhere, lots of people pushing.  My slowest climb at 1.8mph just enough to keep balance whilst perched on the front edge of my saddle trying not tot flip the bike over

    I was reading about that this morning and trying to figure out if it was steeper than Vale St in Totterdown, Bristol: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/what-really-like-living-englands-12693

    The steepest is apparently in New Zealand (for the moment) and in the Wikipedia entry it’s got this:

    Many streets in the west of England and in Wales have reported slopes of 33% and higher. The street Ffordd Pen Llech in Harlech, Wales has a reported slope of 36.6% (rounded to 40% on the warning sign). Vale Street in Bristol is often also reported as the steepest street in Britain (21.81°/40.02%) and hence may have a slope even steeper than 36.6%. However, these roads are mostly shorter roads than those listed above, with far more frequent turns as opposed to the straight path of Baldwin.
