Just heard this covered on Radio 4 – draft guidance from NICE. I hope the main Road.cc site will pick this up, but we need to support the cycling aspects of this advice preferably without it getting tribal and polarised.
Radio 4 discussion wasn’t great – the draft guidance isn’t just about cycling, but it rapidly got to the “so you want to drive cars off the roads, what about children in rural areas getting to school five miles away?” Level.. Cars pollute more when they’re stopped, (mainly because of other cars?) so we must keep them moving. There was some acknowledgement that we’ve designed road systems around the car “forever”there are are too many cars, and there seemed to be agreement about segregation and Dutch Roundabouts being the way.
Cars dont cause obesity and type 2 diabetes went unchallenged. ( well no, you can’t catch obesity from your Ford Kuga but if you do little or no other physical activity, using the car do go down the shops isn’t helping you.).
