Garmin 820 over the 520

    Any Garmin 820 useres here.  I have the “old” 500 and at £175 seems a good deal  and am hoping to get a powermeter from Santa is it worth the upgrade or just shinier?

    I have some endurance gloves

    I have some endura gloves that work on a touchscreen, though as said you’re stuffed in the rain. The elemnt is better anyway.

    I have the 820 (upgraded from a 500 with buttons) – think its fab – dont have an issue with touch screen – doesnt get effected by rain. Only issue is the maps which are a touch small to read without using my reading glasses so really should have gone for a larger screen like the 1000 series but that my only issue  and not really a failing of the 820 as such.  heard alot of negative reviews but can honestly say i’ve not had an issue. several of my friends though swear by the wahoo , guess comes down to which one you feel happiest using

    I recommend keeping your

    I recommend keeping your older gizmo to just show the metrics – alongside a screen for navigation.

    I have an old Garmin Forerunner detachable head unit for all the speed, HR, power etc stats. On the relatively rare occasion that I need screen navigation, I can dedicate my Touring to that alone.

    Massive benefits: I rarely need to push any buttons to switch between screens, so my hands are kept free for punching the Touring when it falls over, and when I end up heading in the wrong direction, at least I can still read my wattage on the indestructible Forerunner screen.

    there are a few touch screen

    there are a few touch screen specific gloves on the market, some not at all expensive. I was using a pair of Carnac winter gloves last week and just about managed to hit the right parts of the screen on my TeasiOne3. TBH I think out front GPS will be old hat not far down the line, we already have wafer thin flexible screens that can wap over your stem. There’s already google glasses and other goggles that displays info inside like a HUD. Don;t know how far that tech has gone but with voice activation or even touch free control to change data fields and toggle to maps, able to zoom out/in etc you won’t need to worry about gloves at all.

    How are you supposed to use a touchscreen on the move, sometimes with gloves?

    How is a touchscreen supposed to work in the rain?

    Much prefer the proper buttons on my 520 …

    I also have the 520, having

    I also have the 520, having replaced an 810, but I don’t like it. It’s unstable and the support from Garmin is awful. It will be replaced with a Wahoo at Christmas.

    I used to have an 820 but

    I used to have an 820 but sold it & bought a Wahoo.

    Overall, it was OK but the thing that got to me was that I had to lock out the screen everytime it rained!  The water would interfere with the screen and send the unit haywire with constant scrolling through the screens, routes vanishing, and various headings vanishing & then randomly reappearing – the most common was a L/R power splitscreen appearing and I don’t even own a powermeter.  Forget trying to put it right with wet, cold fingers as well.  Pretty shit for an outdoor GPS unit really.  Garmin maps wasn’t much cop either.

    The 520 Plus might be a better solution as it seems to have the bulk of the 820 features but without the touchscreen.
