Rapha, bastion of long remembered battles fought on the roads of Flanders and the like sent me an email promoting a ‘11.11’ 30% off sale.
To me and many others, ‘11.11’ [or 11th November] is this year particularly poignant as it signifies 100 years since the signing of the Armistice Treaty ending WW1. 100 years since the carnage of the Western Front was brought to an end.
Instead, Rapha elects to pump up the Jack Ma led Chinese ‘11.11’ Singles Day e-commerce shopping extravaganza. Guanggun Jie!!
Now, I get Rapha Cycling ‘folklore’ and them promoting their historical pretence. It’s a bit of fun and I have long been a serial buyer because of the quality of the kit. But, the blind greed in pursuing e-commerce profits on a day which is special to so many stuns me. I cannot imagine that Rapha founder, Simon Mottram, would have permitted this to occur in the days before the Walmart heirs corporate buyout.
Tomorrow, I’ll be wearing my poppy.
