Strava & weather

Hey all. I’m pretty new here so first a little intro… I’m from northeast USA. Years ago I used to commute via bike almost regardless of the weather (ok, I skipped riding when roads were too icy/snowy) and loved MTB’ing. Fast-forward 9 years, 1 house, marriage, 2 kids and barely any riding :/ In July I picked up a Specialized Allez Sprint Comp and haven’t looked back (picture in the pinned photos thread). I recently added a used trainer for those days when I can’t get outside. Early morning rides make getting up a lot easier.

So what’s the point of all this?
I love Strava, but I can’t stand that it doesn’t have weather conditions as part of an activity. So I built a service to automatically add them and thought others might find it useful.

    What’s my angle?
I’m hoping to get enough users that random donations offset the cost of running the service. That’s it. Apologies for the shameless plug.

    The service is here: https://klimat.app
It can also be found in the Strava app marketplace, https://www.strava.com/apps/visualizer

I’d love any feedback you all have.

    Best,
    Scott

Turns out that my local PBs weren’t wind-assisted which proves that it was Shiny/New syndrome – they were set on the first ride of an old bike I’d upgraded to Ultegra Di2. Still haven’t got near those times despite being nominally being fitter now than I was then!

Solution = another component upgrade or new bike 😉

@OP great idea and app, thanks!

Just started using it, I think you might be on to a winner. Certainly created a buzz when it pops up on feeds, that’s how I found it. Useful for identifying all those wind-assisted PBs!

Could you partner with Relive.CC – would be cool to add weather graphics to their post-ride flybys?

I guess there’s no practical way to add weather to past rides? The data is probably available – possibly Accuweather?

    🙂 thanks.

Partnering is a cool idea I hadn’t thought of, thanks! Adding it to my todo list.

You can add weather to past rides. You just need to update them in Strava and Klimat will process them. I’ve added a period to the title before to get them to process. One of my todo’s is to add a ‘catchup’ feature that will add weather to all your old activities, but it isn’t at the top of my list.

Seems a great idea!  I’m an old so-and-so, how do you update an old ride?

Find it, click the Edit button (pencil icon), make a small change (e.g. to title) and save it. Give it a few mins and it should update – just worked on a couple of mine.

Thanks for the tip, will give that a go. I’ve got this one ride from a while back containing virtually all my local PBs, would love to find out if they were wind-assisted.

I’ve just set up a monthly donation 🙂

    Great idea- signed up.

    Great idea- signed up.

Now how about an app or website that can look at local segments (or even saved routes) and determine which could be go-go or no-go based on wind direction…

On this I wish they would

On this I wish they would break down segments into times of the day. I want to compare my route to someone who has done it at the same time of day not someone that that done it in the dead of night

    Awesome!  Just connected it.

Awesome!  Just connected it.  Really like the concept.  And a +1 from me to connect it with Relive 🙂

    I’ve often thought it would

I’ve often thought it would make sense to have wind strength/direction information included with Strava, so count me in.
