Chain Catcher

Due to complete user error managed ship my chain on a ride yesterday. Overestimated  my capabilities on a lump & tried to get onto the granny ring at the wrong time & it came off.

Fortunately I have a chain catcher installed but I was under the impression that rather jam my chain in between the catcher itself & the small ring so I couldn’t continue, it was supposed to basically force it back on so it didn’t come off completely & you’d still be able to pedal. Needless to say the former happened.

Main reason I got it was to protect the BB area from the chain in case it did come off so it’s no biggie but just wondered if it is supposed to force your chain back on or is it more of a don’t damage your frame insurance policy?

Same. It’s a simple piece and easy to fit. My advice is to fit the ‘business end’ of the chain catcher as close to the chain (when it’s on the inner ring) as possible. Virtually touching. Any gap… and it just won’t work.

I’ve got Deda Dog Fangs on my

My commuter (Veloce) used to drop the chain occasionally – but not since I fitted a Deda Dog Fang, so can recommend those if you have a round seat tube.

I also have no chain catcher on my best bike (Chorus) and never drop the chain.

Pretty much my thoughts. As I said it was my fault it came off in the 1st place & the main reason I got it was to protect the frame.

Just curious as to what others experiences are with them.

Is it high enough? (i.e. does it guide the chain onto the top of the ring’s teeth, or force it into the side of the ring?)

Is it cheap and a bit too flexible?

It’s a Canyon chaincatcher that I bought with the bike & is one of those that attaches to the bottle cage mounts so the chances of it being installed incorrectly are pretty much nil even with my lack of mechanical skills.

You can only attach it one way by the 2 holes at the top & then line it up with the small ring.

    Interesting. Certainly wasn’t my experience.
