Bike rental for Pyrenees. Anyone have a bike to rent?

    Silly question but does anyone have a bike they might want to rent a 5’7″ rider? My Bianchi has a 10 speed rear cassette that only goes to 25 and I’m sure I’ll need a 32 biggest rear cog. It will cost me a fortune to replace my rear cassette, wheel and derailleur so I wondered about hiring a bike for the two weeks I’m out in the Pyrenees. I could rent one out there I suppose. Any advice or private owners willing to rent their spare bike? Have £200 to spend.

    Why would I need to change the chain? (Probably a silly question)

    Two possible reasons, I think:

    1. with a bigger rear sprocket (esp if it’s a 32t) you might find your chain is no longer quite long enough to stretch around the largest chainring and the largest sprocket. You shouldn’t be ‘cross chaining’ like that anyway but it can happen
    2. your current cassette and chain will have worn together. Putting a worn chain on a new, unworn cassette will make the latter wear faster, and it might skip under load on the smaller sprockets.

    Neither of these may apply in practice – but I’d hazard a guess are why schar suggested it.

     

    You’re quite right about chain length. And my chain is a bit worn so it’s time for a new one. Just ordered a new medium length 10 speed Veloce and a 16-30 cassette from The Cycle Clinic. Mr Borg was very helpful. I’m not going to get that extra couple of teeth but I’ll just have to harden up a bit. Thanks for you help.

    If not you can get a Road Fairy or Wolf Tooth to turn your mech into a long cage

    You can buy individual Campag-compatible sprockets, e.g. 

    Note that the last position sprocket on a 10sp Campag cassette may be ‘dished’ so that it sits closer to the spokes. If that’s the case with your current biggest (27t) then you’ll need to swap the last two spacers around, or replace your current 27t with a ‘flat’ (i.e. undished) sprocket, e.g.

     

    IIRC, I bought a single larger sprocket from acycles and it’s been fine. Arrived fairly quickly despite coming from France.

    For the price of two sprockets, you might be as well buying a new cassette though (especially if has an even bigger range).

    Assuming your 10sp is Shimano

    Assuming your 10sp is Shimano…

    you won’t need a new wheel

    Wiggle have Tiagra 11-32 (and even 11-34) 10sp cassettes for £21

    a new chain will cost £15 (Wiggle)

    IF you need a new derailleur a Tiagra (with GS cage) level will cost £26 (Wiggle)

    So, for less than £70 you can have your bike ready for the Pyrenees. With the other £130 you can buy a lot of beer for the end of day celebrations

    can’t do it yourself? buy the bits and get your LBS to install for another £40 – either way your miles ahead in costs
