Granada/Sierra Nevada any tips

    this feb half term the family are skiing and staying in Sierra Nevada whilst I’m tagging along with my bike. My idea is to drive down the mountain each day and have 5 days cycling.  

    Any tips/routes would be appreciated

    Thanks for this. I arrive next Monday (12th Feb) and will have 5 days riding. Really looking forward to it but they are having a cold spell at the moment so I expect I’ll be taking the car down the mountain and heading south where its only 15 degrees*

    Sounds like you’re the other side of the mountain, but …

    We stayed in Velez de Benaudalla for a week a couple of Christmases ago, and the riding around there was just sublime.  As others have said, beautiful, super-quiet roads, courteous drivers, just brilliant.

    Was at Pradollana last April
    Was at Pradollana last April (to ski) and Astana were there using it as a training base at the time. Given the base is 2000 metres you could just roll down the mountain as far as you can face cycling back up. The roads are good but do get busier at the weekend so you might want to factor in. Parts of the road between the base of the mountain and the resort have some fairly steep drops off the side and my passengers in the car were fairly quiet on the journey up and down ! It’s a stunning part of the world and have a look at ride withgps or Strava for route ideas

    I stayed in Fondales, near

    I stayed in Fondales, near Pitres in the Sierra Nevada a few years ago and had the best time on the bike. I went out with a load of MTBers, but was the lone roadie. The ride leader who was guiding the MTBers gave me a tourist map of the whole of the Sierra Nevada national park, which was a folded A4 sheet, to navigate with, and to be honest, that was all I needed.

    The main road along the valley that went through Pitres, Trevelez  as far a Bayarcal was a joy to ride, I did this as an out and back along the valley. Also going out through Cadiar, Haza de Lino then up the GR5204 and A345 to Cadiar then back through Trevelez (which is one of the highest villages in Spain and bloody unwelcome after a long day of riding!).

    I really liked the riding around there, it was really quiet with very few cars and those there were, were really polite.
