    I have been offered an older smart trainer for around 250 notes but not sure the features are where we want to be these days…

    It’s a tacx flow 2220 with the CAR steering:

    I tried it yesterday and it’s my first time on a smart trainer, I enjoyed a more immersive feel. However, it doesn’t have Bluetooth or ant+ so had to be set up with the PC. The steering frame doesn’t do too much and it will take a while to set all up as I don’t have space to keep one bike connected.

    Just seen the tacx smart 2240 at Halfords at under 200 with BC discount. Does this do everything the former does? With Bluetooth and ant+ can I connect to bigring.vr as don’t think the other will (love that site).

    The only downside I can see is it says max slope 6% though can’t see what it is on the former. Is this a big limit, could I just replicate bigger slopes with a tougher gear. If you had a max of 300 for a trainer, what would you do?

    If you’re training to power,

    If you’re training to power, ERG mode sets the smart trainer to a specific power. So you don’t need to change gear or manually alter anything to change the resistance.  You’ll need to do an FTP test first though to get the most out of it. I think this type of training suits me more so I’m probably going to switch to Trainerroad now that the initial gimmick of Zwift has worn off.

    I have the Halfords unit and

    I have the Halfords unit and for me, it does everything I need it to. Works with Zwift (I have it hooked up to an iPad). I guess if you want realistic hill simulation  then 6% is going to be a little low but if you’re following a programme then the ERG mode will be pretty much suitable for all except powerful sprinters. I’m happy that I can set up a winter training plan with it.
