Return of the Pop-up Ads

They are back, those annoying ads for some car components or something. They jump you down the page and have to be dismissed before you can go back to reading the articule or they will keep hijacking the screen and scrolling you down. V. annoying. I really don’t mind relevant ads, I often click through for bike related items, but this ain’t right.

Almost as annoying as when a Fosters advert started to talk to me on the C4 Player, just like Minority Report.

It’s really quite a simple process, just make yourself a root user of your system then add one of the myriad lists of advertising site IP addresses to your host file, and next time you’re browsing there are literally no adverts…anywhere…ever.

You can also go into developer mode in Safari and edit the console and now I don’t even get adverts in youtube…lifehacking at its best đŸ™‚

This sounds brilliant…if only I knew what it was and how to do it!

I have thought about it but then I’d have to watch it all to find out what product they are desperately attempting to sell me.

This technique can be usefully extended by using the ad-blocking hosts file in conjunction with your own DNS server, running on an old computer, a Raspberry Pi, even your router if you install something like DD-WRT on it.

Any device on your network, whether a laptop, mobile, tablet – anything – will then be free of ads.
