anyone used plasti-dip on a frame?

    I’ve been thinking of tarting up a couple of old frames. One’s a DMR sidekick in cro-mo and the other is a generic aluminum hybrid thing. DMR is pretty bashed up and the hybrid is in really good condition.

    Has anyone ever plasti-dipped their bikes? I’ve been toying with the idea as I may get a sprayer to do my alloys with but I’m not sure if it’s worth it one something that may get the odd knock.

    Ideally i should get them blasted and powder coated but I was thinking since I’ll probably do the alloys I may give the bikes a go with it.

    I looked at a few places and ended up choosing a place in Liverpool that’s been going since the fifties that’s so good they’venever had to advertise anywhere. They’re called C & G Finishes and quoted £118 to bead blast it all and do the frame and forks in a single colour. My winter bike’s going in as soon as I can be bothered to strip it down and take it in.

    I have never plasti-dipped a frame (had never heard of it…!), but I have had a steel frame and fork blasted, powder coated and lacquered.  Whole lot cost me order of magnitude £50 around 5-6 years ago and it was done within about 4 days.  [For anyone interested, I used Armourtex near Hackney – no idea whether they exist any more]

    Coating has lasted really well, despite bike being stored outside (albeit with an overhead cover, so limited rain falling directly on the frame).  Colour has faded slightly in the sun, and I am beginning to see signs of rust emerging (but given the frame was a 1980 steel thing that was not in great condition before being blasted/coated, I don’t think that’s too bad).

    That said, powder coating only really good for single plain colour.

    Interested in guyrwood’s comment about stove enamellers.  I have an old traditional 3spd SA bike that is metallic green, now rusting.  I would love to bring it back to (or beyond) its former glory, but wondering where best I can go to get it re-painted metallic green, ideally without spending an fortune (given that I got the bike free when work did a big clear out of long abandoned bikes).  Powder coating clearly out of the question, but what are the other paint options, and what kind of place can I get it done?

    I wouldn’t even powder coat them. Powder coat doesn’t ‘wet’ onto the surface it’s coating in the way that real paint does. It means moisture can eventually find itself between the metal and the paint and cause corrosion. Most stove enamellers will do a frame with a single colour for ~£120.
