First Road Bike

    Hi guys,

    After riding a single speed for over a year now I’m looking to move onto a road bike, however with all the different bikes out there its becoming difficult to choose, espeicially with my limited knowledge.

    My budget is £800 max max, I am 6’4 too, so the bike will have to be a generous frame size (which sadly isnt offered by a lot of companies), currently riding a 61cm frame. I will be using it for long distance cycles on weekends (60/80 miles) and continuing my mid length rides (20 miles) during the week. I don’t plan on having panniers on it as i can carry most things on my person. I plan to really only use this bike on dry days and distance cycling and continue to use my single speed for commuting/worst weather.

     

    I am currently looking at 2 bikes but wanted your opinion.

    Firstly: Ribble 7005 Winter – £640 second hand from Ribble

    Groupset: Shimano 105 Gearset Black; RS500 Chainset 172.5mm 50/34; 11-28 cassette; Ribble Branded brakes
    Wheels & Tyres: Rodi Airline Evo wheels with Continental Gatorhardshell tyres 23mm

    Second option: Canyon Endurance Al 5.0 – £800 new

    Groupset: SHIMANO TIAGRA,  50 | 34 cassette

    Wheels & Tyres: SHIMANO WH-RS010, CONTINENTAL GRAND PRIX

    If you have any other options to throw in the mix please do! 

    The reason I have gone for these option is they both have upper end Shimano gear sets that should ride well (from reviews i’ve read).

    The Cube’s damn good value if it’s in decent nick. Is it 10 or 11 speed 105? 

    One thing I would beware of with Cubes is they tend to come up slightly small, so I would check sizing online and pick it up if you can, just to double check.

    I agree with VeloUSA here –

    I agree with VeloUSA here – test rides and a grin index are the way you should go unless you are certain what you are buying is going to fit or you can try a mates.

    If you’re looking at Giant – Ash Cycles which are down your way have plenty of 2016 models in a variety of sizes still in. In fact they also have some older models too and pretty good value.  Once you decide what you want you can source it from wherever though a good lbs will always be good to know. 

    I’m the same height as you not sure how much you weigh (I’m 100kg) and the big manufacturers bikes will take the weight – specialized, Trek and Giant all have good rider weight limits.   The Canyons do not – there’s a document on their site showing the max rider and bike weight the wheels will take and it’s not that great – though you may be a fair way under my weight, but it could be a consideration. I’ve been hang in ng my nose over a Canyon MTB now for weeks but the wheels are just not strong enough for my peace of mind.

    Your quandary is posted on this forum by many first time buyers. You’ll get nays & yays and various choices all over the map. The solution for you is too test ride each bilke then buy the one which makes you smile the most, not what others say to buy.

    Black 105 chainset, some paint rub as per the pictures
    105 front mech 
    Upgraded Ultegra rear mech
    Easton handlebar stem, aero bars and seatpost
    Selle Italia saddle with some rubbing wear to the edges but very comfortable
    Shimano clip in pedals
    Brand new matching handlebar tape

    Do you have the option of a Cycle to Work scheme? As these can save you hundreds and potentially increase your budget and choice.

    May be worth having a look at Decathlon if you’ve one close enough to you for a test ride

    £650 B’twin 540 (https://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-540-road-bike-105-id_8350480.html) mainly 105 level.

    £799 B’twin 900 (https://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-540-road-bike-105-id_8350480.html) fully 105 level.

    Looked long and hard at both of those until changing what I was looking for somewhat.
