Rourke build components dilemma…

    I promise this will be the last post concerning my almost ocd like indecision over getting my newly ordered 853 steel beauty spot on.

    Had the frame fit with Wayne at Rourke (great bloke with top class knowledge/service/patience). Colour chosen (titanium grey with cream and rainbow jersey stripes). The 5 month wait is going to be a killer but time enough to decide on kit.

    Now bar/stem/seatpost will be ritchey wcs, so now to decide on ultegra or athena carbon (with chorus shifters). And what wheelset (handbuilt, around £250 or factory ultegra/scirocco/dt swiss r32 if i can find some discounted).

    I know these are age old discussions but im struggling to decide on best combo for looks (modern retro) and suitability (longer distances and comfort).

    Will be trawling the net to pick up components as already let heart rule head in getting frameset in the first place (a common problem im sure!). I have 105 11 speed on other bikes so wheels will be compatible to swap between with either groupset.

    Any advice or experiences from those more knowedgable, of which there are plenty, would be much appreciated. Cheers

    had some built for my “best”

    had some built for my “best” bike.  royce hubs,  sapim laser and excellight

    rims.  bike’s gone now but wheels still live on … get hand built 🙂

    As regards wheels have you looked at http://petematthews.com/home/  he is based in north Liverpool. What he he doesnt know about hand built wheels isnt worth knowing!

    It seems nice though I’ve not ridden it for more than a few shakedown rides so far. There’s a bit of a learning curve with the shifts coming from Shimano so I’ve not worked out if I dislike it or just haven’t got used to it. Italian-made vintage bike though – had to be done!

    Silver potenza was my initial idea, just difficult to get it for in the same price bracket using my cobble together method of online purchasing. Would look cool though so might do some more digging, how do you find potenza compares to ultegra?

    I’ve just built an old Columbus SLX frame with Campagnolo Potenza. Looks great in black but comes in polished silver as well. Works perfectly with the Ultegra/105 11-speed Shimano cassettes on my existing wheels.

    As I understand it, 11 speed spacing is the same on Shimano and Campag, so you should have wheels that you can transfer from bike to bike with no problem regardless of which hub you go with.

    Was thinking along those lines with ambrosia zenith endurance hubs. I live in the wirral, just trying to cost things up but h plus son rims do look pretty nice

    Grey Mavic Open Pro or H plus Son rims with stainless spokes on a polished hub have a timeless classic look IMHO and would go beautifully with your chosen colour scheme.
