    Hi,

I’ve some how broken my cable adjuster. What is it called? And can a replacement be easily sourced?

This is a photo of the cable adjuster i’ve broken.

Also does anyone have an idea on how to get the remainder out of the frame?

    Thanks

Not as far as I’ve experienced. Think you could be right about it being from a mech. They probably heard ‘cable adjuster’ but didn’t process the ‘downtube’ bit. I had that happen a couple of times when I was looking for them.

They are rather fiddly to screw in though as you should be fighting the spring. I dropped one several times and had to locate reassemble the pieces (there’s three – the inner screw bit, the spring, and the outer shell).

I managed to screw it in by a millimetre to two but no more than that. When i put them side by side, the new does look a tiny tiny bit larger than the old. I’m only talking by about a millimetre.

    Do the threads of barrel

Do the threads of barrel adjusters vary in diameter?

A LBS sold me one, it looks like the adjuster for a derailleur. I attempted to fit it when i replaced the cable but it wouldn’t screw in to the lug.

    It’s a ‘downtube cable

It’s a ‘downtube cable adjuster’ if you’re asking in a shop or looking online.

They can corrode quite badly and a lot of people forget to clean/protect them. I’ve found many shops don’t carry them, or you may end up with an unmatched pair. I’m guessing by the state of your bike that won’t be a problem though. 😀

    Screw removers are available,

Screw removers are available, try something like this:

It might be a bit inaccesible,  but filing a slot into the broken threaded adjuster w ith a needle file might allow you to turn it with a flat bladed screwdriver. Alternatively…and entirely at your own risk..  you could find a  tight fitting Torx bit that you can tap into the offending item and turn with some pliers. I’ve used this method with a rounded off allen (hex  key) screw and it worked a treat. Take care though!

    Looks like there’s a threaded

Looks like there’s a threaded part still stuck in the lug. Try screwing a thin wood screw in from the bottom and this might turn the threaded part and give you enough to grip it better.

A replacement from PlanetX like this will be OK as they are a 4mm thread.
