Cassette combinations

    Hi guys,

I decided recently out of pure vanity that I want to swap my perfectly working 105 5800 drivetrain (Ultegra 6800 crank) that did 15,000km so far with Campagnolo Chorus. I think the action tells 1000 words about me :). Terrible, I know…

Anyway, I started slowly buying components online and came to the cassette issue. Now, there is still life in 105 cassette and I read that Shimano/Campagnolo compatibility when it comes to 11 speed cassette is pretty good (tiny spacing differences).

Would you guys run it in this way? Any experience?

Of course, at some point I will invest in proper Campagnolo hub for my wheels+cassette, but I was also wondering how does Miche cassettes come into play here? For example, do Shimano and Campagnolo compatible Miche cassettes have different spacing? If so, I guess Miche cassette might not give that little “marginal gain” in comparison with Shimano Ultegra cassette for example. Any experience would be helpful. Miche is interesting because you can get those 12-29, 12-30 combinations.

    Thanks!

    I agree with TheDoctor, there

I agree with TheDoctor, there is 100 percent shifting compatibility between 11-speed cassettes. In other words, Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo 11-speed cassettes work just fine on each others’ drivetrains.

When my best bike was built

When my best bike was built (somewhat after 1958) it had Campag Ergo Athena brake/gear levers with a Campag front mech, Sugino chain set, SRAM chain, XT rear mech and XT 11-32 cassette. It all worked very nicely. Sadly when the bike had to go in for some repairs after a collusion with a car, they were not able to make that combination work again, presumably because of some change to one or other of the specs, and it is now all Shimano, which I’m quite happy with.

    hmm, well, the last known

hmm, well, the last known case of mixing shimano and campag was in 1958 when a joint group of yakuza and mafia types turned up and shoved the cassette where the sun don’t shine – he had to have it surgically removed, and no one has ever tried it since…

but I guess you could give it a go.
