Garmin Edge 820 any good?

    Hi, thinking of getting a Garmin 820, are they problematic, some reviews say they are great and some people have problems, any advice? Thanks.

    Expecting accuracy from a Garmin? Forget it. What you can get though is some sort of consistency with the device you buy (most of the time, if you get a decent device. Quality control with Garmins across the board is tragic, I could write a book on my experiences).

    Have you tried using elevation correction in Strava? The elavation figures for my rides in Strava are significantly lower than the summary data for the same rides provided by my old Garmin Touring device.

    Once they get their act

    Once they get their act together (typically something around 9-12 months after release) then they’re usually pretty damned good. 

    You would think that the software developers for each new device would talk to the developers of the previous devices (take the previous code and improve it…) rather than start from scratch (which is what they appear to do)

    I know I have another post on here about the 820 and 1000. If garmins are so bad are the alternatives worse or are there some that are better?

    Apologies to Chalky71 if this is considered a hijack. I’m genuinely interested..do I get a garmin or something else?……

    Long and short it does pretty

    Long and short it does pretty much everything it should with one glaring issue in my experience: 

    Elevation – it consistently reports the current elevation as around 50m below reality. Presumably because of this “feature”, It also underreports elevation gain/loss by around 15-20% (compared to Fēnix 3, Edge 520, Edge 1000…) 

    Garmin is aware of this and they are apparently working on a fix.
