Playstation VR – tried it?

I’ve been playing games since I could reach the controls of arcade machines at the start of the 80s and I genuinely think this is a game changer that could spread beyond the world of games. I really can’t overstate how you literally feel IN a game not playing it on a screen. It blew me away.

Sadly i’ve also been suffering the horror of VR sickness and some of the games really put my stomach through the blender. Drive Club is horrendous at this. I’ve been playing driving games with wheels and cockpit setup for literally 20 years now and thought this would be nirvana but it makes me want to gip. I’m hoping developers will be able to do something to dial it out as the potential is amazing.  Even my wife who’s instantly dismissive of games sat there for 15 minutes in another world until Drive Club almost made her vomit.

This said if they ever get Zwift for PSVR I’m in (I bought a gaming laptop last year but it’s still not powerful enough to run the VIVE or Oculus)

    I’ve got one – i’m not sure

I’ve got one – i’m not sure about zwift though, aside from the danger of wires i imagine the weight of it is going to be annoying after a while and it’ll probably get seriously sweaty!

I only tried the first gen

I only tried the first gen developers’ Rift, and even just 10 minutes of wandering around an Italian seaside villa had me wanting to chunder. The new ones are supposed to have better head tracking and faster refresh rates and better resolution, but by the sounds of it that might not make much difference..

    Even without VR the missus

Even without VR the missus and I get motion sickness with the newer gen of FPS games, Alien Isolation for example. I’ve played FPS since I was a kid too. I think it’s complicated and not well understood but they will sort it out in VR because they have to – reviewers are throwing up at tech demos so..

VR is coming to Zwift, in about 3 years according to the CEO (listened to Zwift blog podcast last night with his interview). Zwift have no interest in doing hardware, but hardware companies are now convinced that Zwift is the future for all sport, not just cycling, so they’re building the hardware now to make it happen. You’ll see stationary wift right out of the box in 2017, and for running in 2018 it seems too. VR maybe 2019.

I can’t try VR right now – my 2012 iMac isn’t nearly powerful enough for that. Couldn’t even run Doom on it. Gutted.
