Daily Mail has attack of sanity

    So I’m looking along the papers in my local shop, before coming into the office.

    The Daily Mail has a huge front page saying “something must be done” about the scourge of mobile phone use whilst driving, giving examples of people who have been killed by drivers using their phones.

    Did I wake up in some alternative universe?  Since when has the Mail given two hoots about road safety??  I thought they were all “attacking the hard-pressed motorist”???

    this is nuts. Did they ‘start’ a campaign on a Thursday, only to claim victory on the Friday? This is the “Thick of it” stuff, but with a really short attention span …  is this how things are going to be leaked now?

    Tony Benn/Ghandi said that when you come out with a new idea, first you’re ignored, then you’re ridiculed, then it goes quiet for a bit, then suddenly you cannot find anyone who disagreed with it. Perhaps Mayism is just cutting out the boring middle bit …

    The Mail is not infrequently less obnoxious than the worst of its website commenters (not sure about its readership, as website comment-writers aren’t a representative sample of any group).
    Most of all, it has a dislike of criminality, especially violent criminality, that can trump all its other prejudices (the Lawrence case being a good example). If a gay unemployed Polish Muslim cyclist were to be violently attacked by street thugs, I suspect the Mail would side with the victim.

    It’s website commenters are often much more conflicted about such things, mind.

    the DM was the only paper available in a cafe I was in yesterday, so I read this with astonishment. They specifically mention the danger to cyclists from drivers using phones whilst driving

    Perhaps a pretty teenage girl

    Perhaps a pretty teenage girl in a bikini (one of the Mail’s favourite subjects judging by their sidebar) was run over by an immigrant and/or benefit claimant (others of the Mail’s favourite subjects, albeit for different reasons) who was using a mobile while driving.

    Whatever the reason, I doubt it’s for the benefit of cyclists. Still, let’s not look a gift-horse in the mouth!
