Help to find a do-it-all bike

    I’m looking for a new “do it all” bike. I want it for long days out in the Yorkshire Dales (plenty of hills), occasional light touring (3-4 days max) and also just to ride for pleasure and get fitter.
    It might seem daft but I just want to go for a ride and not worry about pot-holes, hills and so on. Just like I used to do when I was a kid on my Grifter 30 years ago…..
    Budget is £500-600
    Any ideas where to start?

    Anyone got or ridden Marin Muirwoods 29er or a Boardman Urban Comp? These look pretty good, just need to see if my lbs has the marin

    I’ve got a Gary Fisher
    I’ve got a Gary Fisher Wingra. Was about £390, and I use it with full mudguards and hybrid (clip-in/’normal’) pedals.

    It’s not the most exciting bike in the world, but is put together fine, has reliably done hundreds of miles, and works fine for pulling our Croozer trailer.

    With your budget, I’d say you should be able to get some nice all-round wheels – you could spend a bit under budget and upgrade the bits you’re most worried about, although there are posters far more knowledgeable than I on what that might be!

    Some the hills are like that one the young lad does in the Hovis advert!! A singlespeed would kill me within minutes

    you’d soon get used to riding a single speed and hills aren’t a big problem generally 😀
    (unless you live in yorkshire..opps, you do . sorry ’bout that. still would be a great way to improve fitness!)

    Plenty of options at that
    Plenty of options at that money as it’s prime cycle-to-work territory. I’d go for a 700c hybrid over a mtb-derived one as they tend to be lighter and better for longer rides.

    the specialized sirrus and trek fx are probably the two biggest selling bikes on cyclescheme and they’re a good starter to look at. the specialized’s position is a bit lower, the trek’s more upright.

    boardman’s urban range is really good value and they ride really well too. ridgeback flight and merida speeder are also worth looking at.
