Grip on the hoods

I have a pair of older (10 speed) SRAM Red units, and have recently found that when it’s wet, and I am on the hoods they get rather slippery. This becomes scarily apparent when accelerating out of a corner out of the saddle.

I have tried different gloves and they didn’t make a difference, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I find that gloves with leather palms are essential in the wet – they’re ever so slightly absorbant, so stick better to the bars/hoods. Same for bare skin.

If they are still slippery then would try a different glove or hairspray.

Yeah, it’s definitely not the angle, the slip is sideways, and more apparent on cornering than straights, and I’ve not long serviced and re-adjusted everything

Been thinking about this, when I was out today in the wet. Are you sure your hoods are at the right angle, or your bars haven’t dropped down? Mine did, but it happened over a long period of time, and I didn’t notice until someone took the piss out of my ‘retro’ bars.

Even if the hoods are slippery, your hands shouldn’t be coming off – there should be enough of an angle for them to sit naturally there.

Ah okay, that’s not too bad of a fix. I think I have a spare set lying around from when I had to change them after one breaking. I’ll see how they do

As VeloUSA said, time for new hoods. Shouldn’t be particularly expensive http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sram-doubletap-brake-hoods/

I would be surprised if that doesn’t help. You could also try sticking a thick rubber band (the wide flat type) tightly round the hood to give you something extra grip-wise. Won’t look pretty but does give extra grip

It’s time to replace the hoods. Hoods are cheaper than a hospital bill. Use YouTube for remove/install instructions. A cheaper quick fix, and surely not long term, method is applying rubbing alcohol which will make the hoods tacky, that is, unless they’re so old and dried out they won’t absorb the RA.
