Bike upgrade question

I have a Giant SCR3 2008, it has only done a few thousand miles and is in very good condition. I have rode the Virgin Cyclone 104 mile route three times on this bike in reasonable comfort. The wheels go round and the gears change when asked. Would I really get any benefit form going up a level, around about the £1000 mark, such as a Genesis Equilibrium?

Short answer: No, I don’t think you would.

Longer answer: I have an SCR 2 and TCR (carbon frame) of similar vintage. I don’t find much difference between them, even though one was £500 and the other £1500 when new. I’ve ridden a £900 Specialized Secteur which felt very similar, in fact I found it a bit dull.

The SCR is a better bike than many people think, so I doubt it will be night-and-day. I think you’d see a difference is gear shifting and brakes but £1,000 is a lot of money just for that. My recommendations:

• a wheel upgrade (discussed frequently on this forum so dig down the threads)
• better brake calipers – Tektro R539 or Shimano R650
• new gear & brake cables
• some good tyres – check the road.cc reviews

These would bring real improvement for a lot less money.
