Mix and match cassettes?

All the Shimano 8 speed cassettes start with 11 tooth which is too high for me.

I’m looking to start with an 8 speed Alivio MTB cassette 11-32 and swap the first two cogs with a 13 and 14 from a 9 speed Sora road cassette.  I know the cogs and spacers on 9 speeds are slightly different thickness to 8 speed but I can get round that by using the 8 speed spacers with shims. I might not even need shims since it is just the last two cogs. EG

    Alivio CS-HG51-8:

    11, 13,15,18,21,24,28,32

    Sora CS-HG50-9:

    13,14,15…

Is the 13 tooth Sora the same fit as the 11 tooth Alivio?

Could I swap the 14 tooth Sora for the 13 tooth Alivio?

Does an MTB freehub have the same splines as a road freehub?

    End result would be 13,14,15,18,21,24,28,32

    Thanks guys!

    Thanks guys!

Rod I didn’t spot that cassette – it’s better gearing for me but it is a bit far down the quality heirarchy. I was looking at Alivio.

Thanks for that link and info Woldsman. I need to find the corresponding MTB cassette doc.

After I posted I discovered that the width of an 8speed sprocket plus spacer is the same as the width of a 9speed sprocket plus a 7 speed spacer. There might be some possibilities there.

    Shimano do CS-HG50 Sora 8

Shimano do CS-HG50 Sora 8 speed cassettes in both 13-23 and 13-26.

They are categorised as from either T-group or V-group depending on which cassette you buy.  In theory you are not supposed to mix groups (you could check which group your existing cassette belongs to and if it’s a T or V then choose the corresponding one).

In reality it makes no discernable difference IMHO (in the past I mixed and matched 9spd Tiagra/Deore cassettes).  In either of the above examples the first three sprockets appear identical (although you might want to check for yourself):

Both cassettes are currently in stock at Chain Reaction Cycles, for example, for £11.49.

I don’t know where you have

I don’t know where you have been looking, but you can certainly find 8 speed Shimano cassettes starting with a 12 tooth sprocket. This might be suitable for you: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/shimano-cs-hg200-8-speed-cassette-12-32t-prod36281/.
