    Hi

just entered my first event. the 80 mile tour of exmoor next month. I’ve never ridden anything like 80 miles before. I’m fairly fit, but worried that it may be too much.
    Any advice?

Oh, I’ll be doing it on my Jake the snake. Is this suitable?

    Cheers

    there’ll be some major
there’ll be some major climbing en route too so make sure your gears are low enough to cope!

the jake should be fine but if you haven’t already i’d recommend swapping the ‘cross tyres for some quick rolling road rubber. you don’t want to make it any harder than it needs to be…

    you say you’ve never ridden
you say you’ve never ridden anything like 80 miles before, so whats the longest distance you have done?. if its 60 odd miles that extra 20 will be easy as long as you take it steady and remember to eat and drink plenty as you proceed.

or if you’ve never done more than say 30 ish miles it would benefit you to get at least two 50/60 mile rides done before the event (not sure when it is so dont know how long you’ve got).

i reckon the main thing with sportives is not to get caught up in the ‘competitiveness’ at the start and go haring off at a pace you can’t sustain..
