Middle chain ring replacement on Tiagra 9 speed triple chainset

The middle chin ring on my 9 speed triple is well worn so I plan to replace it. I have ended up with a replacement shimano chain ring of the right type, 39 tooth 130 pcd, but for a double. That is to say without the shifting pins. The question is will it work if I fit it, or should I get one with the pins?
