Why do Cyclist wear padded gloves.

I have always worn padded track mitts when out cycling. It also appears that practically all pro and racing cyclists do the same. Now I wear mitts mainly because they usually help to prevent nasty cuts, scrapes and surface damage to my palms if I unfortunately take a spill. Obviously they also keep my hands warm too on cold days. They also offer some relief from road vibration, though my bar tape does this anyway so gloves are not really necessary for this purpose. Past experiences tell me that wearing gloves when out cycling greatly reduce the risk of injury to my hands. What are your views ? ?

I used to have a cheap 9 speed tiagra groupset with hoods that hurt my hand to hold after a while, a few bikes later I still wear mitts out of habit.

    Protection of course – which
Protection of course – which is why the Pro’s ride them. You can ride with most bits bandaged, but not your hands…

This comment made me think about my Ultegra carbon brake levers. They can get very slippery when wet. In winter with full finger gloves this is not a problem but in warmer weather when wearing fingerless mitts sometimes when my levers get wet ( quite common up here in Cumbria ) it can be annoying to find my fingers slipping off especially when trying to change down quickly. Does anyone else have this problem and do you think that Shimano need to make their carbon levers a tad more grippy ?

I saw a suggestion a while ago that you could put self-adhesive grip tape on SRAM gear shifters; you could do the same on your brake levers.

I think it’s probably a curse for not buying lucky heather in 1972…

Maybe your gloves are jinxed and causing you to fall off ? 😉

I think the whole protection thing is a bit overdone, and sticking your hand out when you fall tends to result in collarbones getting broken. Tuck and roll…

Bloody hell. Tuck and roll . You must ride in slow motion then ? A bit like Spartacus the other week in the TdF ?

    +1: the perspiration does not
+1: the perspiration does not get along well with shifter lever hoods. With gloves, the hoods are also protected from the salty moisture of your hands 🙂

    Un-padded long finger gloves
Un-padded long finger gloves for me, like the Fox Racing Attack for summer. Grip + hand protection learnt from years of MTB crashes!
