Can anyone give me a convincing reason why we shouldn’t all be seeking a merger of British Cycling, Cyclists Touring Club, and Cycling Time Trials to give added weight behind the campaigning, progressing the sport and delivering better membership benefits to all cyclists ?

It frustrates me that there’s so much crossover between these organisations, and hence “wastage” of resources…I appreciate the long chequered history between BCF and CTT and that people will have to look forward rather than backwards…but surely the momentum that can be added as a collective voice cannot be ignored anymore

just throwing it out there for debate

    You missed out the Tandem
You missed out the Tandem Club, the Trike Association and the BHPC!

    Your list is very much
Your list is very much incomplete:

TLI (The League International) – organise age related bike racing (including TT’s, and cycle speedway)
Audax UK – who over see audaxes in this country

As well as LVRC as noted above.

I personally am not a BC member, but I am a member of CTC, AUK and TLI, and my local club.

The main reason I wouldn’t want to merge them all is that as it stands, I can be a member of TLI, and get a race license for a year, for £10 – if it was all under BC, then my £10 becomes £77 – which is a bit of a jump for someone who wants to race pretty much casually.

It would be nice if they could at least come to some kind of working agreement on the political side of things – British Cycling, for example, don’t seem to care that Cheshire Police have attempted to pretty much re-interpret the current racing regulations to stop most if not all racing on roads in Cheshire…TLI on the other hand are trying to get the police to see sense on this and maintain the same interpretation which they have had for ever.

Off the top of my head, they
Off the top of my head, they all have different purposes / aims.

BC & CTT were/are created as bodies to oversee competition, it’s only recently that BC has muscled in on what might be traditionally thought of as the CTC’s remit.

Based on what I know of CTT, I’m not sure it has the manpower or vision to do more than organise time trials.

But there’s no reason why they can’t sit down and campaign with a unified voice where applicable. Would be interesting to know whether they consult or work together on campaigns.

However, real change won’t come about until people stop seeing cyclists as an out-group and until politicians and the DfT understand the issues and the huge benefits that promoting cycling as A-to-B transport can provide. Looking at how little progress has been made so far, I don’t think they are really making much of an impact.

We must persuade the decision-makers to think about things like these:

Edit: unfortunately we have a disinterested government obsessed with privatisation and propping up the fossil fuel-based economy so why should they bother to listen to a bunch of lycra louts / poor people who can only afford a bicycle?

    There’s also the LVRC who
There’s also the LVRC who organise racing.

You talk too much sense. It would of course be a good idea, which is why it isn’t happening.

I’d also dissolve Sustrans whilst you’re at it. And merge in Cyclenation. Perhaps you could have, within this, different member organisations:
Standard clubs: the BC clubs- full range of activities
TT clubs: the CTT clubs – TTs, cheaper
Touring Clubs: the CTC local clubs. Touring, no racing
    Campaigns: local political lobbying organisations

In Sailing, there’s the RYA. They administer all sailing racing, including model yachts, windsurfers, etc. They even cover power boat racing. They also cover the cruisers (read: tourers) and are very active politically.
