Nightcrawler movie bike scene

I’ve just watched Nightcrawler (2014) on dooviedo and quite a good watch it is too. Reminds me of King of Comedy; we don’t see many out and out sociopath movies, normally they stray to far down the lines of psychopathy. Makes it all the more unpredictable.
Anyway, earlier in the movie Lou/Jake/Nightcrawler steals a guys bike from Venicebeach to pay for his camera kit. I think it was a classic red Cervelo and the guy was wearing a stripy Rapha jersey. He locks it up with a single thin cord. We don’t see it but presumably Jake uses some bolt cutters he had earlier. He then pawns it for $800 saying that it has 36 gears, cost e8000 and he won the Tour of Mexico on it! Was the Rapha guy asking for it for his poor security or for his crimes against biking fashion? You decide.
