Upgrade to electronic group set

I am looking to upgrade my Ultegra mechanical group set to Di2. Has anyone done this? Is it prohibitively expensive and I should just buy a new bike? Is it difficult to install by myself (I do a lot of my own work on my bikes)? I have seen some upgrade kits on eBay for around $1,200 US dollars. Any tips would be appreciated!
