ST-5700 shifters with 11 clicks

My 5700 shifting has often needed attention to get rid of missed or double shifts and I am a bit sick of it. In all the attempts I have made at adjusting, replacing hangers, changing cables etc, I have noticed that from one end of the shifting range to the other, there are actually 11 clicks available. I can set it up so that when fully fully out, the chain is on the small sprocket, and have 10 clicks to the largest, and a spare click to take me into the spokes if I did not set the stop on the derailleur correctly. Alternatively, I can adjust so that I am on the largest sprocket with all clicks used up, and shift back down to 11 and have one click in the bag. Are my shifters sh1t or is this extra click a precursor to the spinal tap 5800?
