Alpe d’Huez

    I’m off to La France in June and aiming for a few big days in the saddle. Does anyone know if the route up Alpe d’Huez is just up, then down the same road back to Bourg? Is there a different way down that might make things more circular? Always prefer not to just ride up, stop, and ride back the same way.

    ColinPeyresourde…we don’t really do organised events, but we are looking at doing the Aubisque and Hautecam followed by the Tourmalet and Peyresourde this summer.

    I did the Alpe a couple of
    I did the Alpe a couple of years ago, a week before the Tour climbed it twice on the same day. Like the pros, we carried on after the Alpe and climbed the Col de Sarenne, which was stunning. The descent off the Sarenne is pretty sketchy, as others have mentioned, but it’s incredibly beautiful. Bourg-Alpe-Sarenne-Freney d’Oisans-Bourg is a 50km round trip with 2850m of climbing.     There’s definitely more than one way up the Alpe. They did the back way in the Tour a couple of years ago when Froome won it. But the back way looks sketchy. I have no idea if that works with your accommodation location.

    Thanks…I’m staying (most likely) in St Jean de Maurienne, so its the Croix de Fer/Glandon there and back, or could make it even more massive by going out via the Telegraphe/Galibier and back via Croix de Fer….see how we feel….

    firstly, you’ll have a blast as its a great climb!
    I’m aware of a couple of routes down.
    I went last May and planned to climb the mountain and then descend down La Sarrene, however unfortunately it wasn’t open due to late snow.
    We ended up descending back down the alp to La Garde (which i do have to say was amazing!!) before traversing the valley Hameau de la ville. You can then follow this to Le Freney de Oisans where you can then climb Les Deux alpes.
    We came back down the duex alpe before return to the base of the ADH along the D1091.

    Have a look on Google maps as you should be able to follow where I have decribed.

    I might be able to dig out the gps files if you want them.
