DfT report – cycling accidents in London

    The BBC has published an article at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-31612253 (sorry, not sure how to make this a link) which says that “There were 22,988 accidents and 80 deaths involving cyclists in London over five years, according to Department for Transport (DfT) figures.” This was only the number ” reported to or attended by police”. So, do you report every single dooring or bump, if you weren’t actually hospitalised or your bike broken? I know I don’t.

    When you look at the most dangerous junctions the common factors are easy to see for anyone who passes through them:
    Poor design and road layout combined with an excess of vehicular traffic trying to transit through the junctions at speed.
    They really are best avoided. I would recommend south Londoners look at quietway 3 to avoid many of them

    Scary – as a South Londoner I
    Scary – as a South Londoner I use 5 of those junctions regularly. The Elephant is horrible and I even try and avoid driving through it when I’m in the car. I went that way last night as it happens, though I was getting a lift back from a training session and wasn’t behind the wheel myself.

    I have to say though I do wonder why so many cyclists do use the Elephant and Castle roundabout, given that it is so horrible. There are alternative routes. I do see people using it who I know could go a different (and much safer) way.
