An introduction…and a question on freehubs…

    Hi everyone. Well this is my first post – having knocked triathlon on the head due to wanting to concentrate on road biking more, I thought it would be a good idea to join a road bike specific forum! Everything tri related has been sold and I’ve just built up a wonderful Kinesis Aithien!

    Which leads me onto a question… I feel like I have learned loads about bikes in the last few years but there is one area to which I am still not sure – freehubs. I have gone for a complete Campagnolo Chorus 11 setup on the new bike but (ironically) have Campag Zonda wheels with a Shimano freehub. Although the Chorus setup works pretty well with an Ultegra 11 speed and a KMC chain, I think I would rather have a Campag cassette. Could anybody inform me on the best way to go about this? Do I just need to change the freehub or the whole body?? Like I said, I’m completely unfamiliar with this area of road bikes.

    Any help greatly appreciated!

    I swapped the freehub from
    I swapped the freehub from shimano to,campagnolo on my mavic wheels this year and it was pretty easy, I got almost new body on eBay and for a YouTube tutorial, it was pretty simple really.

    Cheers guys. Well I took the bike out for it’s maiden voyage today and have to say that the gearing worked flawlessly! So yeah I guess you’re both right, it seems a bit pointless messing with something that works so I’ll just keep things the same and just look after them!

    There is a very small
    There is a very small difference in spacing of the cassettes between shimano and campagnolo (talking fractions of a mm)
    This means that they are compatible and will have 95% the performance of full campagnolo…however for 100% performance you will need a genuine campagnolo cassette and freehub….(but as said above it will be a pretty expensive swap)
    Keeping everything clean and properly lubed, with good quality cables will make much more difference than the cassette swap

    If it works fine then I wouldn’t bother changing it but yes, you’d need to fit a campag freehub which will cost £80 + the cassette. The benefit would be probably be negligible at best.
