Sometimes we only have ourselves to blame. I was cycling through Ewell village this morning wearing the usual dayglo tabard, helmet etc, when a pseudo racer in black skin tight lycra ( =)) ) pulled out ahead of me and continued down the hill ahead of me…. nothing wrong there I here you say… well this cyclist thought it was a good idea to fit the brightest rear light he could possibly find, and aim it at eye level to get noticed. Still nothing? Here is the glaring mistake to the idiots amongst us; humans presented with a bright or flashing light aimed directly at the eyes will avert their gaze, and if they are overtaking they will not be looking at the scource of the painfully bright or flashing light, so when said buffoon swerves to avoid a pot hole or other hazard, the overtaking vehicle will be looking elsewhere.

Moral for the story:- if you are too stupid to think of others on the road, get good health insurance or stick to off road cycle paths!

Appologies to all those who already know how stupid this is and have wasted part of their valuable time reading this.

I have got camera footage, and I will extract a still and post it later, so everybody can see what I mean.

Cygolite hotshot. I ordered 6 from the USA. I believe now you can order them through uk suppliers. From memory they were about £35 once imported.

Typically you have two options when you come up behind him: sucker another rider in between to eclipse his light or drop him (muttering about retina burn as you pass by) :)

Indeed. Passed it as it when the lights changed, as it was wobbling about, determined not to put its feet down. As to the replies of Lycra is luverly ducky….. nuff said. In answer to the ‘should be as bright as possible’ sieg heil cyclonazis, if I am not looking at it because its light is painfully bright, then if it swerves, it will be under the wheels of my truck and I will no nothing about it …
I must admit that getting one sensible reply does prove the point that 95% of the population are a waste of perfectly good oxygen =D>

So you admit to being, at best, a selfish incompetent who is unable or unwilling to provide
adequate road space to another road user? Don’t tell me, you drive a truck, so you are too important and skillful to need the highway code.

As for ‘painfully bright’, do give over with the bullshit. No cyclists have lights anywhere near as bright as the son et lumiere productions carried round by the average truck. But you neither know nor care do you – too busy pushing the rest of us out of the way.

So, you’re driving too close to give the appropriate space to another road user then?

And not observing the surrounding traffic?

I know what you mean… I’ve also met people whose opinions who didn’t agree with my own. Needless to say, they’re wasting that precious oxygen no longer!
