bib tights for sub zero riding

    I’m looking for some bib tights that will keep me warm in sub zero temperatures. I currently have some dhb super roubaix tights which are great but in temps close to zero or above, I feel the cold on my upper legs.

    I’ve seen the dhb vaeon zeros which have windproof panels on the legs and also handle well in the rain apparently, and they’re around £70.

    I’ve also seen the assos fugi (S7’s I think), which look great and I’ve also heard of assos’ reputation for quality but it obviously comes at a price (over £300 I think).

    I don’t really want to spend more than about £100-150, and need some tights that also allow a call of nature if required (which my current dhb’s do) as I tend to go on rides of 4-5+ hours.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    How good are the vaeon zeros?
    Which other tights should I be looking at?

    The Aldi ones have windproof
    The Aldi ones have windproof panels on the front and are almost too hot. They were a couple of months ago though so unless there are any on Ebay…

    Not sure if anything will work that well in sub zero temps. One option is to wear some padded bib shorts and on top buy some unpadded thick bib tights. If you do this then you get two layers covering just about all of your upper leg.

    On another note i have a pair of the dhb Vaeon Zero Padded Bib Tight, which I have had for about a year. They are very well made and will cope with most conditions, I have never tried them in sub zero conditions but just above 0 they are warm enough and the windblock panelling works well.

    I’ve been wearing a pair of
    I’ve been wearing a pair of Shutt VR’s Roubaix tights for the last two years. Genius kit. Was out in -3.6ºC this morning in them, quite toasty.

    Only bugger is – they don’t seem to sell them anymore!

    Value for money has to be DHB
    Value for money has to be DHB Vaeon Zero. Obviously you don’t get premium brand after sales care (Rapha/ Assos crash repair etc) but if you are looking for good bib tights then these should be on your list.

    Windproof panel from upper thigh, through the knee to half shin really helps keep the chill off. Once you generate some body heat they retain it really well too. Foot stirrups keep the bottom tidy under your socks and a decent size zip makes nature calls easy.

    I have a couple of pairs and the missus has three pairs we like them so much.

    last winter I made the switch
    last winter I made the switch from padded winter tights to shorts+unpadded tights. One of the best desicions I’ve made. gives an extra layer on the upper legs and crotch, right where you need it. Currently happy down to about ~1°C with the Howies shorts+tights.

    I have a pair of Gore ALP-X
    I have a pair of Gore ALP-X 2.0 bib tights. They only get worn about 3 or 4 times a year, they’re great but too warm for me.
    I tend to go padded bib shorts, tight’ish icebreaker merino leggings then the Alp X. If it’s any warmer than say 5 or 6 degrees other bib tights get used.
    I ride all year in all weather but when it gets below freezing I get the heebie jeebies after a couple of minor spills on black ice..

    Hi, I have the Altura Night Vision winter long legged bib tights and they are great, lovely and warm. They have thicker forward facing ‘parts’ at the thighs/knees and keep that area warm,,,,,, also the ‘man bits’ snug too.

    I’ve just reviewed Rapha’s new winter bib tights and they coped really well in sub-zero temperatures, and are good in the rain too, or when the roads are very wet and there’s loads of spray from the front wheel

    Just layer some newspaper
    Just layer some newspaper over your legs, easy to tear to size for a decent fit, and costs nothing.
