Chain Reaction Cycles email spam

I bought a lot of bits and pieces from CRC, I ride around 900 miles a month through all weathers and regularly trash chains, cassettes, brakes, etc. I probably spent a few hundred quid a year with them. But lately, this lot have been sending me emails asking for reviews of everything I buy.

Normally when a company does something like this, you simply visit your account page and disable whatever it is you don’t want to receive. But there are none of these options on the CRC website. Furthermore, despite my repeated requests that they stop, CRC ignored my correspondence and continued to plague my inbox with these emails.

Now it isn’t really a big deal but considering that otherwise, I receive no spam, it is annoying to have to keep deleting them. But it’s even more annoying that a company who I’ve bought a fair bit of kit from won’t listen to one of its customers. So I’ve randomised my password, changed my email address to something nonsensical, sent them a few choice messages on Twitter and Facebook, and promised from now on to use their competitors. And don’t get me started on them using huge boxes to send powerlinks and the like.

Like I said, it isn’t something I’m going to dwell upon, but it’s annoying how some companies just don’t give a toss about what their customers think. Hopefully Wiggle (who I’ve had no issues with) won’t fall into the same trap.

Today I received an apology from CRC (weeks too late), with the following link:

    http://www.pages05.net/chainreactioncycles/opt_out

It’s a shame they don’t include that link in their emails. It’s also a shame I can’t find that link anywhere on their website. It’s as though they want to make it difficult to find.

I have filters and all the appropriate cycle related emails, amazon, ebay, grabone, porn 👿 …etc all get sent to their own folders which I read/delete at my leisure…and I love filling in surveys and suchlike- especially reviews of products that I’ve purchased…what I don’t like though, is leaving packaging feedback for amazon…and that silly question did it arrive within a certain timeframe…If it doesn’t and if the packing is in tatters…I’ll certainly let them know…I don’t need a survey for that….
    …and relax…..

    Blimey, some folk love to
Blimey, some folk love to complain. Won’t answer an email asking for a review, but takes the time to change password, email, and post on Twitter and Facebook, and now the forum of at least one cycling website (even though you were happy with their service). Strange behaviour!

    It’s probably automated
It’s probably automated (bought stuff > send review request) and there’s not a lot that they’re prepared to do about it. I’ve had review requests from a number of retailers (the most galling being one for products that I still haven’t received, and weren’t even in their store at the time). I just delete them.

In fairness, I think all the major online retailers are as bad as each other, not a day goes past without me getting some kind of email from Wiggle, CRC or Evans.

I suspect it’s not classed as bulk mail, it’s individual correspondence, so I don’t think they need to provide an opt-out. I’ve had a couple of these from wiggle but not a massive amount.

    There is usually a link,
There is usually a link, right at the very bottom in small print, of those kind of e-mails, saying if you want to unsubscribe click it.
