Surrey and Prudential Contract

    Just curious, how long does Surrey hold it’s Ride London contract for? There were postings that the contract was agreed on a verbal basis, seems odd. I’ve done the Ride 100 twice and know the area well but I’d look forward to doing the ride through other counties. Some of the entry fee will go to local charities but I’d like to see that spread further afield. Apparently the next ballot will close after 100,000 (or early 2015). That’s a lot of guaranteed dosh for 20,000 or so entries.

    Surrey seems to have sewn up all the big high profile rides, how does that work? I know Yorkshire had to pay a lot for their bid. Have other counties been able to bid?
    It was very refreshing to be in Yorkshire for the Tour with London taking a back seat and Surrey not at the party.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks all good info. Would any future hosts have to bid? I heard Sky were going to be the London Surrey sponsors but the price was too high. I guess my final question is who is paying, the sponsor or the councils or both?

    It is my understanding that the first one was not part of the contract. It was the Olympic legacy event and the contract was sorted out after that for 5 years.

    That came direct from RideLondon themselves with all the talks I’ve been in with them to get recumbents involved.

    The contract was 5 years with an option on a further 2 so that’s a definite three more (cos they’ve run 2 of the 5 now).
    So up to 2017 with an option to extend to 2019.

    The race part of it is currently a UCI 1.HC but I think the plan is to upgrade to 1.UWT by 2016.

    I don’t think there’s much
    I don’t think there’s much chance of the route changing drastically – it’s the London Surrey Classic after all. We don’t see Milan – San Remo change its route much, do we? Would be fun if they expand the concept to do more closed road 100-milers around the country though.
