Topeak Ridecase (or similar stem cap mounts) – feedback?

    Hello all. I’m intrigued by the Topeak Ridecase, particularly given that it can be mounted on the stem cap of my bike. As a newcomer to road cycling, I’ve started using Cyclemeter to track my (admittedly slow, erratic and limited) progress. I’d quite like to avoid having to fumble for my iPhone in a dry bag in my back pocket whenever I stop, and look down for stats en route.

    Has anyone invested in one, and if so, are you satisfied? Are there any alternatives out there?

    Ive been using the ridecase
    Ive been using the ridecase for just over a year now and its been great, no worries about the phone coming off and it enables me to do everything I could with a garmin plus my phone is insured so if I do have a crash it’ll only cost about £40 to replace.

    I’d recommend getting the battery pack too, this is great and means you don’t have to worry about running out of juice on longer rides (i could get about 4 hours without it but had to make sure wireless and 3g were off and the screen brightness was down)

    Can also recommend the HRM that they do, also had this just over a year and its been performing faultlessly.

    The only problem is when it rains, the rubber cover is fine for drizzle and light rain but can let a bit of water in when it gets heavy.

    Might be worth holding out a little bit longer though as there is a new model coming out this summer that completely encases the phone and is watertight!

    also they do a version for some samsung phones and also a “wet bag” style case that you can fit most phone in

    I’ve been using one for a
    I’ve been using one for a couple of years now; first with a 4, now with a 5. No complaints; ‘phone has stayed attached (and dry with the rubber cover in place when it’s been raining). The case/frame does add a little bulk, but has protected the ‘phone when I’ve dropped it, so there’s a benefit.
    I did try videoing a couple of rides, but the road buzz makes the footage a little fuzzy; best stick with helmet or chest mounts if you want decent results.
    There’s a cheap, extra handlebar mount that you can buy, so now even my pub bike can have onboard Cyclemeter/GPS…

    As I can’t abide paying money
    As I can’t abide paying money for something I can make myself I’m currently testing a prototype of my own design made from an old inner tube with encouraging results. I will make a video of how to make it when I’m happy with it. When it rains I just stick the phone in my pocket.

    lots of alternatives:
    lots of alternatives: biologic do a full case, quadlock a very tidy quarter-turn mount, Rokform do a posh alloy case, there’s the Wahoo RFLKT which’ll sync to your iphone and give you stats that way. loads more too

    Just googled the ridecase, looks like it’s for iPhones only? So not much use to lots of us, then.

    When it’s not raining, I use
    When it’s not raining, I use a Finn. Excellent simple solution, google it!

    For rainy days I have a solution that dates back to paper maps and route sheets – a stem mounting Rixen and Kaul map holder (big plastic rectangular pouch with a window on top). I wouldn’t buy one in 2014, though! But these days I put the smartphone in it with lots of room to spare, so actually it’s still a good solution.
