Thinking about getting new 105 groupset in black as I think it looks quite good. My concern is with the durability of the black coating, is it going to look buggered in a couple months? Just wondering what peoples experiences where with the black groupset. Don’t know whether to play it safe and just get silver.

Having had Sora, Tiagra and 105 the 105 is far superior.

The black finish is very durable. Go for whatever goes best with your frame, you won’t regret the upgrade.

The silver coating on the brake levers on the 105 on my winter bike has rubbed off. It’s not terribly noticeable, the scratched name plates where I’ve fallen off a couple of times detract from the colour difference! 🙁

I’ve just swapped my sora for 105 on my commute bike only a week ago and really prefer it. Slicker changing plus its 10sp rather than 9sp. Hoping it will cope with next winter better than the sora which was really ropey. Sora is deffo something you cut your road cycling teeth on before upgrading. I chose black simply because my frame is predominantly black.

Yeah going to get it from Merlin. Price is really good like you said. Got silver 3 yr old Sora on bike at the moment, so looking forward to the improvement in performance.

I have black 105 on my very abused winter bike, it lasts fine. The cranks will show rub, especially if you wear bulky overshoes in winter though, but its not hugely noticeable.

Go with whatever looks best with your frame!
