Packing away the Winter kit

Easter has come and gone, the apple trees are in blossom and the morning temperatures have been 9 or above for at least two weeks. Even if they dipped to 6 I could get by with some warmers. So this weekend the winter kit all went into boxes for the next 6/8 months and hopefully won't be needed until November. My bibtights and jackets all clean and snug, at least I know I can grab out the Castelli Samremo thermosuit quickly, which has to be the buy of the year. Now this made me think, I have lots of thermals, warmers etc, and this winter the temperatures here in Manchester never got below 0C, at least not between 8am and 10pm when I am moving about. There were plenty of cold and windy days, but it was always too stormy or wet to get too cold. I didn't use my thermal socks (yes I have neoprene overshoes for the wet), or liner gloves or a face mask; those extra thinks for minus temps. I don't remember a winter where it wasn't freezing for at least a couple of weeks. It is probably an urban heat island thing too, but still... This is a bit off-topic I know, more like a debate for the Daily Mail on some thread on a Global Warming report. I wonder if there are many roadies that don't think the climate is changing? I don't drive, but I could take public transport. Respiration > combustion. I don't mind using my winter kit less, though I don't fancy having a tree fall on me or the endless wet days of autumn. This evidence may be slightly anecdotal.

I’m not sure I’d consider
I’m not sure I’d consider this recent mild winter to be an aberration – I’d be more inclined to think that the previous 2 or 3 were exceptionally cold, relative to the years before and after.

My tights and winter base
My tights and winter base layers were packed away this weekend. This morning was the first commute in shorts (5am). I have to say it was plenty warm enough and it’s almost daylight at that time now which also makes for a far more enjoyable 17miles into work.

The winter was wet and windy for the most down here in the South West and a pair of ruined shoes were also a victim for me. This was mainly down to the lake at end of the Bath to Bristol cycle path which was approx. 30cm deep for a number of weeks and I cycled through it twice a day regardless.

Climate change definitely. I would have preferred a colder and drier winter to be honest.

This winter in Glasgow was utterly miserable.

Mostly, it hovered a couple of degrees above zero and rained every day with the exception of the 8th of February.

My beloved Gaerne winter boots now stink because they didn’t properly dry out for three months.

Obviously, it’s never like this in Glasgow normally. We’re all doomed.

I agree, it was an exceptionally mild winter and I much preferred it to the previous one which was incredibly cold. I remember setting off one morning at around 6am and not being able change gear after all of two minutes because my rear mech and cassette had iced up. I haven’t packed the tights away yet but it can’t be long now. Spring definitely sprung much earlier this year. How did your winter go? Did you get many miles in? I had an enforced break of a few weeks which is making feel a bit slow at the moment. I’ve a few weeks to get shape for the Time Megeve Mont Blanc. Have you got any events planned this year.

To answer your question, I’ve no doubts about changing climate.
